Wear Turquoise for the Elderly The “Go Turquoise for the Elderly” campaign in South Africa is a month-long initiative, running from May 15 to June 15, to raise awareness about the needs and well-being of the elderly, especially those outside of formal care facilities.
Purpose and Objectives:
- Raise Awareness:
The campaign aims to increase public awareness about the challenges and needs of the elderly in South Africa, particularly those who are not in elder care institutions.
- Promote Elder Care:
It highlights the importance of elder care and respect for senior citizens.
- Raise Funds:
Organizations, homes for the aged, and other groups can use the campaign as an opportunity to raise funds for the elderly.
- Highlight Elder Abuse:
The campaign often coincides with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15th, which is a time to focus on the issue of elder abuse and the importance of reporting it.
- Encourage Support:
It encourages individuals and communities to show support for the elderly through various actions, including wearing turquoise, engaging in community activities, and promoting kindness
Turquoise was chosen as the campaign colour for its representation of calmness, clarity, and healing—qualities we hope to bring to elder care in South Africa. The soothing blue-green hue symbolises communication and protection, reminding us to listen to our elders’ voices and safeguard their interests
