Human Rights Day

This year’s theme is “Our Everyday Essentials”, which aims to re-engage people with human rights by showing how they shape our daily lives, often in ways we may not always notice

Human Rights Month is commemorated in March to remind South Africans about the sacrifices that accompanied the struggle for the attainment of democracy in South Africa.

The democratic government declared 21 March Human Rights Day to commemorate and honour those who fought for our liberation and the rights we enjoy today.

While there isn’t a single list of exactly seven core human rights principles, the key foundational concepts universally recognized (especially by the UN) are Universality, Indivisibility, Interdependence, Equality & Non-Discrimination, Participation, and Accountability, often with Inalienability as a core characteristic.

Human Rights Day 21 March 2025

Human Rights Day in South Africa is historically linked with the events in Sharpeville on 21 March 1960 when 69 people died and 180 were wounded when police fired on a peaceful crowd that had gathered to protest against the Pass laws.

What are human rights?

Human rights are rights that everyone should have simply because they are human. In 1948, the United Nations defined 30 articles of human rights in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It established universal human rights on the basis of humanity, freedom, justice, and peace.
