Mandela Day

Nelson Mandela International Day is an annual international day in honour of Nelson Mandela, celebrated each year on 18 July, Mandela’s birthday. The day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009, with the first UN Mandela Day held on 18 July 2010

18 July has been declared Nelson Mandela International Day, but as South Africans, we embrace the chance to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s life for the whole of July.

MAKE EVERY DAY
A MANDELA DAY
#ITISINYOURHANDS

Mandela Day is an annual global celebration that takes place on 18 July to honour the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela. This day is a call to action for individuals, communities, and organisations to take time to reflect on Mandela’s values and principles and to make a positive impact in their own communities.

Why get involved?

There is much still to be done. Inequity continues to grow. The COVID-19 pandemic’s exposure to existing disparities lingers. Climate change, war and conflict are leading to widespread displacement and impoverishment.

It is still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity.

How to get involved in 2024: #ItIsInYourHands

On #MandelaDay2024, we urge you to identify those in need around you and do what you can to make a difference for them.

In South Africa, the Nelson Mandela Foundation is focusing its 2024 Mandela Day work on its priority social justice areas – early childhood development, food security and just cities.

Join us. It is still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity.
